Touchstone Electric is a licensed electrical contractor working in Raleigh and across Wake County — panel upgrades, EV charger installation, whole-home generators, rewiring, lighting and troubleshooting. Pricing is given upfront before work starts.
Raleigh is two electrical markets. Inside the Beltline — Oakwood, Five Points, Hayes Barton, Boylan Heights — much of the housing stock predates 1960: 60- and 100-amp panels, two-prong outlets, cloth-insulated branch circuits, the occasional run of knob-and-tube still in service. Those homes need capacity before anything else, and a home electrical inspection is often the right first step. You cannot add a heat pump, an induction range or a car charger to a panel that is already full.
North Raleigh, Brier Creek and Wakefield have the opposite problem. The wiring is modern and the panel is adequate, but the house was built before anyone planned for two EVs in the garage and a standby whole-home generator. That work is about adding capacity cleanly, not repairing what is there.
Either way the permit goes through City of Raleigh Development Services inside the city limits, and Wake County for unincorporated addresses. We pull the permit, meet the inspector, and you get the sign-off in writing.
Most electrical work in Raleigh that changes a home's wiring needs a permit. In general that includes service and panel upgrades, new circuits, EV charger installation, standby generator and transfer switch connections, and rewiring an older home. Like-for-like swaps, such as replacing a light fixture, switch or receptacle in the same location, are typically treated differently. If you are unsure which category your job falls into, ask before work starts and we will confirm it with the permitting office.
The licensed contractor doing the work should be the one who pulls the permit. That matters at resale: a permitted, inspected and closed-out job leaves a paper trail a buyer's inspector and an insurer can verify, while unpermitted work can surface as a repair request or a closing delay. A homeowner-pulled permit also puts the responsibility for the work on the homeowner rather than on a licensed contractor.
Where the job sits decides which office handles it. Addresses inside the Raleigh city limits go through City of Raleigh Development Services. Unincorporated addresses in Wake County are handled by the county, and some neighbouring towns run their own permitting. Your address determines the right jurisdiction, so we check it before submitting anything.
Once the work is ready, the inspector is scheduled through the permitting office, and the inspection is done at the property. Some jobs have more than one stage, such as a rough-in inspection before walls are closed and a final inspection once devices are installed. If an inspection does not pass, the inspector lists what needs correcting. We make the corrections and request a re-inspection, and the permit is not closed until it passes.
Our work is also covered by our Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty. Working nearby? See our Cary service area for the neighbouring Wake County market.
